As a matter of fact, Cordelia did love her father whole-heartedly. Her reserved statement of her love was indeed unpleasant to the ears. She understated her love for her father because she disliked her sister's hypocritical flattery, which led to her father's generous present to them. She did not want her love for her father tinted with any intention for material reward from her father.
Unfortunately, the old king mistook Cordelia's plain words as pride. Infuriated, the king split the other one third of his land between his two elder daughters and their husbands, which he had intended to give to Cordelia. The king relieved himself from the responsibility and power of a king, though he retained the title. There was only one request from Lear: to allow him to have one hundred palace guards as his servants and allow him to live in the palace of his two elder daughters in turn.
